Counter-narcotics police in eastern Afghanistan have destroyed more than 100 kilogrammes of illegal drugs as part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown, local authorities said Wednesday.

The narcotics were burned publicly in Khost Province, according to Qari Wahidullah Matawakil, the provincial director for counter-narcotics.

The seized contraband includes hashish, heroin, opium poppy, and thousands of stimulant tablets locally known as ‘Tablet K’, the officials said, without providing further operational details.

Mr Matawakil warned that authorities would take legal action against anyone involved in the production or trafficking of illegal drugs, stressing that such activities would not be tolerated in the province.

The move came as the Afghan government intensifies efforts to curb narcotics production and trafficking.

In recent months, security forces have destroyed hundreds of acres of poppy fields and incinerated several tons of illegal drugs across the country.
