The police commissioner in Enugu, Ahmed Ammani, has urged political parties, their supporters, the electorate and residents to remain law-abiding over the complicity in the March 18 governorship elections.

INEC, on Monday, suspended the collation of results and announcement of the winner of the March 18 governorship election in Enugu following contention in the results of Nkanu East and Nsukka council areas.

This is contained in a statement issued by police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe on Monday in Enugu.

The police chief, while appreciating the peaceful disposition of the electorate during the elections, warned those planning to hide under the elections to foment trouble to desist forthwith.

According to him, police will not hesitate to deal decisively with any person or persons found breaching public peace in the state.

“The CP further warns political parties, their candidates and supporters to desist from making unguided utterances and using social media to create and peddle negative information around the elections,” said the police statement. “This is done in such a way as to cause tension and/or incite people to violence, especially through unapproved protests in contravention of the provisions of the Public Order Act 2004.”

The police asked the public to report criminal suspects quickly and “anyone found breaching public peace to the nearest police station” by calling the command’s control room numbers 08032003702, 08075380883, 08098880172 or call/send WhatsApp messages to 080806671202.
