Police warn youths against blocking Kebbi-Sokoto highway
The Kebbi police command has warned youths against further blockades of the Kebbi-Sokoto Federal Highway, following a recurrence on Friday after a similar incident on September 23.
The warning is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Birnin Kebbi by the police public relations officer (PPRO), SP Bashir Usman.
Mr Usman said the latest blockade disrupted vehicular movement for about three hours, obstructing motorists, persons requiring emergency medical attention and other members of the public from moving freely.
He described the action as unacceptable, noting that it violated traffic regulations and could create opportunities for criminal activities.
“The command hereby urges aggrieved persons to channel their grievances through lawful means, including elected representatives, traditional rulers and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), rather than obstructing public highways,” he said.
Mr Usman warned that any recurrence would attract appropriate legal action, with organisers and participants liable to investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.
“The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Hadejia, appeals to residents to act responsibly, respect the rights of fellow citizens and refrain from conduct capable of disrupting the free movement of persons and goods.
“The commissioner urges parents and guardians to counsel their children and wards against participating in unlawful assemblies and to encourage respect for the law.
“The commissioner reaffirms the command’s commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring the uninterrupted movement of lawful road users.
“The command will henceforth not tolerate any blockage of roads under any guise,” the PPRO quoted the commissioner as saying.
