Pope needs no further treatment after cancer surgery, say doctors
Days after Pope Leo XIV had a surgery for lung cancer, his doctors said he needs no further treatment for the disease as tests confirm it was “localised.”
“A subsequent oncology evaluation confirmed that no further treatment is necessary,” Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said.
Pope’s doctors said the October 13 surgery he underwent was to remove lung adenocarcinoma.
In medical term, the disease is limited to a certain part of the body. For example, localised cancer is usually found only in the tissue or organ where it began, and has not spread to nearby lymph nodes or to other parts of the body, according to National Cancer Institute.
The Vatican on Saturday announced that the Pontiff “was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and returned to the papal apartments in Vatican City State on Saturday afternoon. The Pope was discharged four days after a successful surgery that lasted about “90 minutes” on Tuesday.
On Thursday, the Pope on in a video message sent to young people around the globe urged them to register for 2027 World Youth Day.
