Poultry attendant bags 14-day community service for stealing eggs, bird

An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday sentenced one poultry attendant, Ibrahim Azeez, to 14-day community service for stealing eggs and a noiler bird.
Azeez was earlier charged with stealing on Tuesday, to which he pleaded guilty.
The Magistrate, Olaolu Olanipekun, had adjourned the case until January 8, for review of facts and judgment.
Olanipekun on Wednesday held that the sentence followed the defendant’s guilty plea.
The magistrate ordered that the 14-day community service should be done between the hours of 9.00 a.m. and noon until completion.
Olanipekun also directed that the convict should report back to the court after completing the service.
He noted that the court considered the fact that the convict was a first-time offender, and the stolen items were recovered.
He also considered the plea of the Defence Counsel, W. A. Olajide, who earlier prayed that the convict be sentenced to community service or be given a lenient option of fine.
Olajide prayed that Azeez should not be sent to the correctional facility as the place would only harden him instead of reforming him.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Musbau Lawal, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 3 at about 2.00 p.m., at Chimero Farm, Olubi Village, Ibadan.
Lawal said that the defendant stole five hatchery eggs worth N4,000 and one Noiler bird valued at N25,000, totalling N29,000.
He said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
