Starting from the 2026/27 Premier League season, clubs would no longer put gambling sponsorship on the front of their matchday shirts, the league said in a statement released on Thursday.

“Premier League clubs have today collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ matchday shirts, becoming the first sports league in the UK to take such a measure voluntarily in order to reduce gambling advertising,” the statement read.

The decision followed several consultations with Premier League clubs and other relevant parties before taking action amid an ongoing review by the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport on gambling legislation.

The move makes the EPL the first sports league in the whole of United Kingdom to do so as they seek to limit the display of gambling in the game – eight Premier League clubs are currently wearing gambling sponsorship in front of their matchday shirts.

“The Premier League is also working with other sports on the development of a new code for responsible gambling sponsorship,” the league statement also added.

However, gambling brands and sponsorship are allowed to continue to feature on the sleeves of clubs’ matchday shirts, training kits, LED advertising and in other areas.

In order to allow the eight current clubs affected by the new rule to gradually phase out their current deals, the ban would only come into effect by the end of 2025/26 season.
