Members of the African Union Peace and Security Council Committee of Experts have raised concerns that weak adherence to procedures could undermine critical peace and security decisions across the continent.

The concern was highlighted at the PSC induction programme for the committee of experts hosted by the National Counter Terrorism Centre Office of the National Security Adviser, on Monday in Abuja.

Participants stressed the need for stronger technical discipline in the council’s operations. Chairperson of the committee, Victor Makwe, said that the effectiveness of the PSC depends heavily on the precision and quality of work done at the expert level.

Mr Makwe noted that the committee serves as the link between the PSC secretariat and ambassadors, warning that any lapses in coordination or documentation could affect final decisions.

“What the council delivers is a reflection of the work done by experts. If we get it wrong here, the outcome will also be flawed,” he said.

Mr Makwe urged members to use the induction to review existing processes, identify gaps and improve working methods to enhance efficiency. He also called for more practical engagement and honest reflection among members to strengthen the council’s overall performance.

Head of the PSC secretariat, Neema Chusi, emphasised that even minor procedural mistakes could disrupt high-level diplomatic processes. According to her, the role of experts goes beyond routine support, as they directly shape the quality and credibility of council outcomes.

“Small procedural issues can make the whole meeting collapse. We must pay attention to every detail,” she said.

Ms Chusi added that the induction programme was designed to sharpen members’ understanding of council procedures and improve coordination among member states.

She further highlighted the need for stronger collaboration on counter-terrorism efforts, noting that the programme would explore partnerships with relevant institutions.

The meeting continues with technical sessions aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and decision-making processes within the PSC.
