A former presidential aspirant, Patience Key, has resigned from the Peoples Redemption Party, stating that the party’s core values no longer resonated with her.

Ms Key disclosed this in a letter addressed to the PRP national chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, dated May 27 on Thursday. She said that she joined the party because its core values, principles and ideals resonated with her then.

Ms Key, however, said that over time, she realised that many of the values that inspired her to join the party were no longer upheld.

According to her, a political party cannot effectively achieve its vision for the people when the mission and principles that should guide its operations are not faithfully practised.

Ms Key stated that she joined the party with sincerity, to uphold the rights of the talakawas (common people), and to contribute toward the growth of the country.

“I believe strongly in service, accountability, transparency and transformational leadership,” Ms Key stated.

According to her, victory in politics is not determined by size, the popularity of its name or whether it is old or new, but through a willing, disciplined, strategic and people-centred leadership.

“I have also come to understand that these aspirations can only be achieved within a political environment where members are valued, leadership is transparent, internal democracy is respected and there is a collective willingness to genuinely work toward winning elections and salvaging the nation,” Ms Key explained.

Ms Key joined PRP in 2021 and participated in two election cycles: first, as a presidential aspirant in 2023 and later, as a candidate for the Edo governorship election in 2024. She noted that she had seen the internal workings of the party closely and had contributed her time and resources to its growth and visibility.

The politician added that she had made a difficult but necessary decision to continue her service to Nigeria with a platform that aligned more closely with her values, which she believed was necessary for meaningful progress.

Ms Key described her experience with PRP as both educative and memorable, adding that the time had come for her to leave and begin a new chapter.

“I therefore respectfully and gladly resign my membership from the Peoples Redemption Party, effective immediately. Thank you, goodbye and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Ms Key said.
