Liverpool’s season reached a new low on Wednesday night in their Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven as they were thrashed 4-1 by the Dutch side right at Anfield Stadium.

Following the 3-0 league loss to Nottingham Forest at home over the weekend, Wednesday’s game against PSV was an opportunity for Liverpool to manage a win and ease tensions at Anfield, but fell short once again.

Ivan Perisic opened the scoring for the visitors from the spot six minutes into the game after the ball struck Virgil van Dijk’s arm, resulting in a penalty. However, Dominik Szoboszlai equalised for Liverpool 10 minutes later, guiding home a parried ball into an open net.

PSV regained their lead 11 minutes into the second half through Guus Til, who fired home a through ball from Mauro Junior. This forced Liverpool to intensify their attack in search of a second equaliser.

Unfortunately for the Reds, Couhaib Driouech further extended PSV’s advantage in the 73rd minute, pouncing on an effort from Ricardo Pepi that hit the post before latching home a pass from Sergino Dest to score again in added time to seal the victory for the visitors.

The result meant Liverpool missed an opportunity to move into the automatic round of 16 qualification zone in the Champions League table, dropping to 13th with nine points from a possible 15.

In his reaction after the game, Liverpool manager Arne Slot, whose job is currently under threat, said, “I want to be positive about the reaction of the players after we went 1-0 down because until half time we played a good game. The only way to go is to go through. We have to face where we are and fight really hard.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal defeated familiar foes Bayern Munich 3-1 in another high-profile game on Wednesday to go three points clear of second-placed Paris Saint-Germain on the table.

Jurrien Timber in the 22nd minute, headed home a perfect cross from Bukayo Saka to put Arsenal ahead, but the visitors responded 10 minutes later through Lennart Karl, who met a cross by Serge Gnabry with a timely touch to equalise for the German champions.

Noni Madueke restored Arsenal’s lead in the 69th minute when he tipped home a cross from Riccardo Calafioro near the goal before Gabriel Martinelli completed the well-deserved win eight minutes later.

The Brazilian knocked a pass from Eberechi Eze off Manuel Neuer, who was way off his line, before playing it into an open net.

The Gunners remain the only team with a perfect record in the Champions League this season, having won all five matches so far.
