R. Kelly begs Trump for clemency over 30-year prison sentence
Fifty-nine–year-old R&B singer and songwriter, Robert Sylvester Kelly, otherwise called R. Kelly, has asked President Donald Trump to shorten his ongoing prison sentence.
The artist was jailed in June 2022 after U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly found him guilty of an array of sexual misconduct offences, including sex trafficking.
He was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment.
Mr Kelly’s plead for clemency is contained in court records made public this week by the Office of the Pardon Attorney, an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice that reviews requests for commutations of federal prison sentences.
Reports say the imprisoned artist’s application for clemency, rather than a full presidential pardon, is currently pending.
The request followed Mr Kelly’s lawyer, Beau Brindley’s public lobbying of Mr Trump for over a year.
Mr Kelly was convicted in 2022 in Chicago of child pornography offences and engaging in inappropriate sexual relationships with teenage girls.
