Men of the North Central District of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Nigerian Railway Police Command have arrested two suspected vandals in a renewed fight against vandalism of Nigeria’s railway infrastructure.

The NRC deputy director of public relations, Mahmood Yakub, made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Yakub said that the arrest followed intelligence reports on discovery of private buildings in Kafanchan, Kaduna state, where vandals used to hide stolen materials.

According to him, materials recovered in the buildings include 25 short rails and 91 sleepers.

“The Railway Police Area Command, Kafanchan, stormed the premises and recovered some vandalised materials including 25 short rails and 91 sleepers stacked in two different buildings in the same premises.

“The two suspects arrested at the premises are being detained at the Railway Police Station, Kafanchan, as the police intensify investigations to round up other members of the gang still at large.

“All recovered materials are under the custody of the Railway District Police Station in Kafanchan as exhibits,” he said.

He said that the NRC was determined to stamp out vandalism of railway infrastructure.

Mr Yakub said that the managing director of NRC, Kayode Opeifa, was delighted at the developments.

He said that Mr Opeifa appealed to Nigerians residing on the railway corridor to report suspicious movements to the nearest law enforcement agency.
