The Chief Imam of Falomo Police Station Mosque in Lagos Island, Dr Tajudeen Adebayo, has emphasised the crucial role of discipline in tackling Nigeria’s challenges.

Mr Adebayo said this during the 2024 Ramadan Tafsir organised by the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria in Lagos.

Speaking on the theme; “Ramadan: An epitome of spirituality, self-discipline, and interpersonal relationship,” Mr Adebayo highlighted the need for Nigerians to adhere to rules and standards, lamenting the prevalent indiscipline in the country.

He said that corruption, a form of indiscipline, deprives Nigeria and its citizens of opportunities and resources.

He, therefore, called for a shift towards self-discipline and obedience to foster national development.

Mr Adebayo, who also spoke on the significance of fasting in promoting self-discipline and enhancing interpersonal relationships, suggested that sustained discipline beyond Ramadan could reduce the reliance on law enforcement agencies for compliance.

He said, “Fasting is an opportunity for everyone to scale up their spirituality and improve on their self-discipline, as well as enhance their interpersonal relationship with others.

“Fasting is an epitome of self-discipline, which aims at strengthening the human soul to be more disciplined and obedient. Discipline is the quality of being able to behave and work in a controlled way, which involves obeying particular rules or standards.

“Man should be able to use his intellect to control his passion and desires by putting a reign on things that are permissible throughout the day. It should be easier for him to keep away from the forbidden and be law-abiding in society.”

Supporting Mr Adebayo’s submission, CIIN President, Edwin Igbiti, called for unity and sincerity among citizens, emphasising the importance of spiritual and professional dedication to nation building.

Mr Igbiti expressed worry that the citizens, governments and lands had been partitioned by artificially created religious, ethnic and financial borders.

He charged Nigerians to be their brother’s keeper in all dealings and practise their faith with sincerity and soberness.

According to him, the Ramadan Tafsir organised by the institute was aimed at raising professionals who are required to display dedication and loyalty in their followership and professionalism, both in the nation and in the workplace.

The CIIN president said the discourse brought to fore the role of spiritual and interpersonal relationships in building a better society.

“I urge us all to continue to use this holy month of Ramadan to stay close to Allah by seeking for forgiveness of sins, praying for our country, family and humanity in general,” he said.

As Mr Igbiti’s tenure as the 52nd President nears its end, he called for prayers for a successful conclusion and seamless transition of leadership within the institute.
