The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the deployment of renewable energy solutions nationwide.

The organisation’s head of communication, Oisereime Lloyd–Dietake, said in a statement on Thursday in Abuja that REAN made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Samuel Olumode.

The visit forms part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration on safety standards within Nigeria’s solar and renewable energy sector.

“During the meeting, both institutions discussed areas of collaboration, including improving installation standards, promoting fire safety awareness, and educating renewable energy practitioners on preventive measures and emergency response protocols.

“The engagement focused on presenting a united front in educating and sensitising the public on the safe deployment of renewable energy technologies, particularly solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

“REAN emphasised that solar PV systems in themselves are not inherently fire or disaster-prone. Rather, fire incidents associated with solar installations are linked to the use of substandard components, poor system design, and improper installation or maintenance practices,” Ms Lloyd–Dietake said.

According to her, addressing the issues remains a key priority for REAN and its partners.

She further highlighted ongoing engagements with regulatory and standards institutions such as the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

She said this was meant to strengthen compliance with quality standards, encourage the use of certified technologies, and promote the engagement of trained and certified professionals across the sector.

She said the collaborations were aimed at improving system reliability, reducing safety risks, and building public confidence in renewable energy technologies.

“As Nigeria continues to expand access to clean and reliable energy, REAN remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen standards.

“It is also committed to enhancing consumer protection and ensuring that the transition to renewable energy contributes positively to both national development and the safety of citizens’ lives and property,” Ms Lloyd – Dietake said.

She quoted Mr Olumode as assuring REAN that the Federal Fire Service was ready to partner with it in promoting fire safety standards.
