The Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS), on Saturday, disbursed N91.5 million to 1000 victims of the 2022 flood disaster in Kogi.

The beneficiaries, who were mostly elderly people and women, were also given food items such as rice, beans, garri, palm oil and groundnut oil in Ajaokuta.

Dauda Muhammed, NRCS assistant coordinator of disaster management, who supervised the distribution of cash and food items, said the beneficiaries were selected from five communities in the state’s Ajaokuta and Bassa Local Government Areas.

“We selected 250 of the beneficiaries from the Ajaokuta community, while another 250 beneficiaries were picked from the Kporoko community.

“In Bassa LGA, 200 beneficiaries were selected from the Gbobe community, 150 from the Kpata community, while 150 beneficiaries came from the Goji community, making a total of 1,000 beneficiaries from the two local governments.

“For the cash disbursement, each of the 1,000 beneficiaries received N91,500 contained in a customised ATM cards,” he said.

Mr Muhammed explained that the food palliatives distributed to the beneficiaries include 25kg bags of rice, 12kg bags of beans, 12kg bags of gari, and five-litre kegs of palm oil and groundnut oil.

He further disclosed that the Red Cross also donated a borehole to each of the five communities.

According to him, the assistance is targeted at the most vulnerable of the 2022 flood disaster.

He said the aim was to support them to regain their life balance after going through harrowing experiences occasioned by the flood disaster.

Mr Muhammed expressed hope that the money and the food items distributed would bring some relief to the victims and help them stabilise.

Earlier, the Kogi branch chairman of NRCS, Benjamin Ajodo, said the cash and food support was preceded by on-the-spot assessment and inventory of structures and items affected by the flood disaster in the five communities.

In his goodwill message, the traditional ruler of Ajaokuta, Onu of Ajaokuta, Ibrahim Mustapha Aye-oba, commended the Red Cross for the good gestures.

The traditional ruler said the cash and food items would go a long way in mitigating the plights of the victims.
