Red Cross gets WFP humanitarian equipment to boost emergency response

The Nigerian Red Cross Society received 28 categories of humanitarian equipment from the United Nations World Food Programme to strengthen disaster response and boost the organisation’s capacity to manage emergency operations.
Abubakar Kende, secretary general of the Red Cross, received the equipment in Abuja on Friday and said it was a major boost to the organisation’s emergency response infrastructure.
He said humanitarian work had become increasingly demanding, requiring specialised human and material resources, adding that effective logistics systems were essential for timely transportation and delivery of relief materials during interventions.
He said the handover marked a new phase in a year-long partnership between WFP and the Nigerian Red Cross, focused on strengthening emergency preparedness, communications capacity, and supply chain systems nationwide.
Mr Kende said the strengthened capacity was expected to deliver faster, more coordinated interventions, improved warehousing and supply chain operations, enhanced communication during crises and boosted preparedness for climate-related and conflict-induced emergencies.
He said WFP supported a detailed organisational assessment to secure long-term improvements, strengthen operational structures, enhance coordination mechanisms and reinforce the Nigerian Red Cross’s ability to respond effectively during emergencies nationwide.
