Nigerians on social media have lamented the spate of widespread violent killings across Nigeria as President Bola Tinubu assures his compatriots that he is doing well running the country remotely from Europe.

Some mocked Mr Tinubu, calling him a “remote worker”, “remote president,” and “diaspora president”, practising “virtual governance.”

While in France, Mr Tinubu met U.S. State Department Senior Advisor Massad Boulos, remotely inaugurating a census committee and condemning gunmen attacks in Plateau that claimed almost 100 lives, ordering security agencies to swing into action.

On Thursday, Mr Tinubu, through a statement by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, said he had been “overseeing critical national issues” from Europe while assuring citizens “that governance proceeds without interruption” despite his absence from the country.

This has sparked reactions from Nigerians on social media, with many berating Mr Tinubu’s remote presidency amid a resurgence of wanton killings across the country.

An X user, @Joshuaezs, said, “This is proper mad, innit? Tinubu’s out here chilling in London, saying he’s running Nigeria like it’s a Zoom call, while Boko Haram’s causing chaos back home—150 people dead.

“Peter Obi’s got a point, yeah, slating him for being AWOL. Reckon it’s a right two and eight, leaving the country in a mess like that.”

@Masonndubisi3 said, “Thank you Mr presido, from Paris to London while numbers of humans are dying every day; also remember to visit Afghanistan.”

Another X user, @RealUcheOkoro, said, “It is utterly perplexing that President Bola Tinubu continues to direct the affairs of state from Europe for nearly two weeks. This raises serious questions about his fitness for office; he is unqualified even for a local government chairmanship.”

He added, “Historically, no credible leader from the West would abandon their nation for such an extended period. This detachment from reality undermines the very essence of presidential responsibility and accountability.”

Another X user, @anuforo, said, “Nigeria has gone since the APC took power in 2015. What we are seeing today is the shadow, remnants and rancours of the former Giant of Africa.

“Tinubu running Nigeria from Paris/London means we are becoming weaker than before.”

@Ogechukwuchime said, “Buhari started this virtual government style, Tinubu came, added fintech style. Nigerians are now sheep without shepherd.”
