The chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Benson Babajimi, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for reviewing salaries and welfare packages for Nigerian Armed Forces personnel.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr Babajimi also commended the creation of four additional army divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 soldiers.

He described the measures as historic, visionary and timely, saying they underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.

According to him, the enhanced remuneration for officers and soldiers, particularly the substantial increase for junior personnel, will boost morale and improve operational efficiency.

Mr Babajimi said the improved welfare package would strengthen personnel retention, attract highly qualified recruits and reinforce commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also praised the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions through the establishment of new formations in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin.

The lawmaker described the reorganisation as a strategic milestone that would improve command and control and decentralise operational responsibilities.

He said the development would enhance rapid troop deployment, strengthen border security and improve intelligence-led military operations nationwide.

According to him, the expansion will increase the military’s capacity to tackle terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

Mr Babajimi said, “The President has once again demonstrated remarkable leadership and an unwavering commitment to the security and stability of our nation.

“These bold reforms represent strategic investments in the men and women who daily make enormous sacrifices to safeguard our country’s peace, unity and democratic values. A well-motivated and properly equipped military remains indispensable to achieving sustainable national security and development.”

Mr Babajimi reaffirmed the committee’s support for ongoing security reforms and pledged continued legislative backing for their implementation.

He said the committee would provide the necessary policy support and oversight to ensure the success of the initiatives.
