The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Capital Territory Judiciary on Thursday visited some FCT courts, calling on the judiciary to be effective and efficient in its operations.

Adamu Gamawa, the chairman of the House Committee on FCT Judiciary, led other committee members on an oversight visit to the courts in Abuja.

He said the visit is in line with the constitution’s provisions, which empower the legislators to carry out oversight roles.

Mr Gamawa stated that the visit was not to witch-hunt anybody but to assess the condition of the courts and come up with possible ways of addressing the challenges.

He noted that the visit would enable them to know the state of some of the ongoing projects.

The lawmaker said the performance or utilisation of the previously appropriated funds, including the 2024 budget, would determine what should be provided in the 2025 budget for the FCT judiciary.

In her remark, the chief registrar of the High Court of the FCT, Hadiza Dodo, solicited the committee’s assistance over what she called pressing and urgent difficulties.

According to her, some of the challenges include underfunding of the construction of the High Court complex in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, and inadequate funding for the construction of magistrates’ quarters.

She also listed additional courtrooms and inadequate official vehicles, among others.
