Republican kicks off convention to nominate Trump as candidate after failed assassination attempt

The Republican National Committee on Monday commenced its convention in Milwaukee to formally nominate U.S. former President Donald Trump as their presidential candidate for the 5 November election.
This comes less than 48 hours after a failed assassination attempt on the former president.
Fighting through a series of legal battles and a failed assassination attempt, Mr Trump will be nominated as GOP presidential candidate for the third straight time during the four-day convention. His running mate is also expected to be announced during the event.
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Mr Trump announced he would be attending the convention in Milwaukee.
“Based on yesterday’s terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin and The Republican National Convention by two days, but have just decided that I cannot allow a ‘shooter,’ or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else. Therefore, I will be leaving for Milwaukee, as scheduled, at 3:30 p.m. today,” Mr Trump said.
Saturday’s attack, which left Mr Trump with an injury on his right ear, with a person dead and some injured, has sparked widespread global condemnation.
The assailant, Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old Pennsylvanian, was neutralised after he opened fire at Pennsylvania campaign ground, causing panic.
President Joe Biden has denounced the attack, calling for a thorough investigation into the shooting while urging Americans to avoid speculating about the shooter’s motives or affiliations.
