French riot police clashed with students and activists protesting in demand for education reforms as they marched across France on Tuesday.

The protests, which started on Monday, took a frightening turn on Tuesday as police cracked down on protesters with tear gas.

Hordes of students and activists hit the streets of Nantes, Marseille, and Lyon on Tuesday carrying placards and banners that read, “They don’t really care about us” and “Survive or study.”

Similarly, thousands of students marched across Lyon, Rennes and Strasbourg, lighting fires, despite police firing tear gas to disperse them.

In response to escalating tensions from the nationwide protests, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu suspended high school operations across France for the rest of the week.

“Burning down a high school does not improve the state of high school buildings,” Mr Lecornu said as he suspended high school activities for the week.

Meanwhile, during the protests on Monday, a 15-year-old’s hand was blown off as students and the police clashed in northern France.

“I want to express my thoughts for this young man. Our absolute priority is to protect our students. This is obviously a tragedy,” Minister of National Education Édouard Geffray told France Info on Tuesday.
