The Asukama community in the Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers have appealed to the Nigerian Navy to sustain its fight against oil theft.

Chairman of the community council of chiefs, Walter Nkot, made the appeal on Monday during a medical rhapsody by the naval outpost in Ikuru as part of activities marking the 69th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.

Mr Nkot, while commending the navy’s fight against oil theft, pledged the community’s continued support, particularly against maritime-related crimes.

He thanked the Nigerian Navy for the medical outreach, describing it as a “historic and commendable gesture”.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the commanding officer of Naval Outpost Ikuru, Adams Kajola, said the essence of the medical outreach was to provide free medical services and improve the community’s well-being.

Mr Kajola, represented by the executive officer, Mohammed Muye, emphasised the critical role of good health in community development.

He reiterated the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to the well-being of its host communities, noting that the initiative aligned with the vision, mission, and strategic directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogalla.

The commander described the medical rhapsody as a demonstration of the navy’s role as both a defender of the country and a builder of community well-being.

“The navy remains resolute in conducting kinetic operations to safeguard national security. Initiatives such as this reflect the navy’s investment in non-kinetic operations that directly impact lives,’’ he said.

He added that the outreach was also meant to foster stronger relationships between the navy and the immediate communities and give back to society.

“The free medical rhapsody programme includes blood pressure (BP) check, blood sugar screening, malaria and typhoid tests, distribution of medications, and health talks, as well as free medical consultations, among others,” he said.
