The Rivers State police command says it has presented cheques worth N76.01 million to families of officers who died in active service.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

Ms Agabe said the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, presented the cheques to the families of the deceased officers.

She, however, did not disclose how many families received the cheques.

She said the gesture was part of the welfare initiatives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to support families of fallen officers.

According to her, Mr Adepoju reaffirmed the IG’s commitment to the welfare of police personnel and their families.

The statement quoted the commissioner as saying that the sacrifice made by police officers in the service of the nation would not be forgotten.

“He commended Disu for his continued commitment to the welfare of police personnel and families of officers who died in active service.

“The financial assistance will provide meaningful support to the beneficiaries during a difficult period,” the statement added.

Ms Agabe further stated that the recipients expressed appreciation to the police for the financial assistance and described it as a demonstration of concern for their welfare.

She stated that the command remained committed to prioritising personnel welfare and honouring officers who died in the service of their fatherland.
