American filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, have been found dead in their Los Angeles residence.

According to TMZ, the bodies of the couple were discovered in their Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon, with law enforcement sources confirming that the two bodies found at the property belonged to the Reiners.

According to the report, both victims suffered lacerations consistent with knife wounds.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division has taken over the investigation, though authorities have yet to release an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the deaths or confirm whether a suspect has been identified.

TMZ also cited dispatch audio in which a firefighter was heard calling for backup to the couple’s Brentwood mansion at about 3:30 p.m., although no further details were provided about what responders encountered at the scene.

Mr Reiner was widely regarded as one of the most versatile filmmakers of his generation, with a career spanning more than five decades across television and film.

He first gained recognition in the 1970s after playing Michael ‘Meathead’ Stivic on the landmark television sitcom ‘All in the Family’.

Mr Reiner later moved behind the camera, directing different films that became hits.

The producer also co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, a production company responsible for numerous successful films and television projects.

As a political activist, he was also known for his advocacy on social issues, remaining a prominent public figure long after his peak years in filmmaking.

Mr Reiner married Michele in 1989, and the couple remained together for decades, often keeping their private life away from the public eye.

The couple had three children, Nick, Romy, and Jake Reiner, while Mr Reiner had one daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his first marriage with American actress Penny Marshall.
