Ronaldo named in Portugal squad for sixth World Cup appearance as Neymar returns for Brazil after three years

Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez listed four goalkeepers, nine defenders, six midfielders, eight forwards in the team unveiled on Tuesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo will feature in his sixth FIFA World Cup tournament in North America after the 41-year-old was included in Portugal’s 27-man squad for the competition starting on June 11.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez listed four goalkeepers, nine defenders, six midfielders, eight forwards in the team unveiled on Tuesday, with late squad regular Diogo Jota also earning an honorary call-up.

The former Liverpool player was killed in a car accident in Spain last year. 

Other players included in the list were Manchester United duo of Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot as well as Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, João Neves and Gonçalo Ramos.

Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa, José Sá, Rui Silva, Ricardo Velho.

Defenders: Rúben Dias, João Cancelo, Diogo Dalot, Nuno Mendes, Nélson Semedo, Matheus Nunes, Gonçalo Inacio, Renato Veiga, Tomás Araújo.

Midfielders: Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha, João Neves, Rúben Neves, Samú Costa.

On Monday, Neymar returned to international team duty as head coach Carlo Ancelotti added the 34-year-old to Brazil’s 26-man squad for the tournament. 

Neymar has not featured for the Selecao since 2023 amid his struggles with injuries but there were calls from the public ahead of Monday’s announcement for the former Barcelona forward to be brought back to the team.
