The Russian Federation has allied with Venezuela to rebuke the Donald Trump administration for capturing President Nicolás Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores, extracting them to the U.S. to stand trial for drug-smuggling charges.

“We reaffirm our solidarity with the Venezuelan people and our support for the Bolivarian leadership’s course of action aimed at protecting the country’s national interests and sovereignty,” the statement from the Russian foreign ministry said Saturday.

Vladimir Putin’s government said that there was no record about any Russian casualties affected by the multiple explosions that rocked Caracas on Saturday.

“At present, there is no information about any Russian citizens who have been affected,” the statement added.

Moscow encouraged dialogue between both nations and cautioned Mr Trump to allow the Venezuelan people to decide their destiny “without any destructive” interference.

“In the current situation, it is important, first and foremost, to prevent further escalation and to focus on finding a way out of the situation through dialogue,” the Putin administration said. “Venezuela must be guaranteed the right to determine its own destiny without any destructive, let alone military, interference from outside.”

Mr Trump had announced that Mr Maduro had been captured by U.S. forces months after declaring him wanted for cocaine trafficking into the United States.
