Russian gunman kills six, injures scores in Ukraine

A rampaging gunman reportedly opened fire and killed at least six people, injuring about 14 in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Saturday.
The shooter also took others hostage in a supermarket before he was killed by the police.
Ruslan Kravchenko, Ukraine’s prosecutor general, identified the shooter as a 58-year-old Russian who stays in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, in a statement via his official X page, condemned the shooting, adding that investigations are ongoing to get more details about the attack.”Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are now examining all the circumstances of the attack in Kyiv against ordinary civilians,” Mr Zelensky said.
He added, “The attacker was eliminated. He took hostages and, tragically, killed one of them. He shot dead four more people right on the street, and one more woman passed away in a hospital due to sustained injuries.”
Sending out condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, Mr Zelensky said, “Four hostages have been rescued. At present, fourteen people have been reported wounded. Sadly, this number may rise as people continue to seek medical assistance.
“Among the injured is a 12‑year‑old boy. Doctors are providing all necessary medical care. We wish all the wounded a swift recovery.”
According to the Ukrainian president, it has been established that the attacker set fire to an apartment before going out onto the street with a weapon.
He said the shooter had previously been prosecuted for criminal offences, adding that he had long resided in the Donetsk region and was born in Russia.
According to the president, all available information about him and the motives behind his actions is being thoroughly investigated.
He noted that every detail must be verified.
