Ravil Maganov, chairman of the board of Russia’s largest private oil company, Lukoil, has died after falling from a Moscow hospital window. 

The Moscow Times reported on Thursday morning that Mr Maganov tumbled from the sixth-floor window of the Central Clinical Hospital.

The hospital, known for treating Russia’s political and business elite, confirmed Mr Maganov’s passing to state-run news agency RIA Novosti. 

“The Central Clinical Hospital told RIA Novosti about the death of the head of the board of directors of Lukoil Maganov, investigators are working on the spot,” RIA said through its Telegram page. 

Mr Maganov was the second top Lukoil executive to die in mysterious circumstances. 

Russian police opened a criminal case in May after former Lukoil executive Alexander Subbotin was found dead on Sunday in a shaman’s home.

Lukoil was one of the few companies in the country that opposed the war in Ukraine.

“Calling for the soonest termination of the armed conflict, we express our sincere empathy for all victims, who are affected by this tragedy,” the company said in March. “We strongly support a lasting ceasefire and a settlement of problems through serious negotiations and diplomacy.”

Mr Maganov had worked at Lukoil since 1993 and became its chairman in 2020. His brother Nail Maganov is the head of Russian oil producer Tatneft. 

Mr Maganov was awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky, bestowed to civil servants for 20 years or more of highly meritorious service, in 2019 by President Vladimir Putin.
