The Russian military sank a Ukrainian reconnaissance ship named Simferopol with a sea drone in the Danube delta, the Defence Ministry in Moscow said on Thursday.

This is the first use of a sea drone by Russia.

The spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk, later confirmed the hit on the ship.

He said there had been one fatality and several injuries due to the attack, noting that most of the crew members were safe.

“The search for several sailors continues,” Mr Pletenchuk said.

He said that the consequences of the attack currently were being addressed.

According to publicly available information, the Simferopol is a mid-sized reconnaissance ship currently in the testing phase.

The Ukrainian Navy was largely destroyed after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the beginning of its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
