A military court in eastern Russia on Wednesday sentenced 13 young men to long prison terms over acts of sabotage on the country’s war effort.

In a statement, the court in Chita, east of Irkutsk, said it imposed sentences of 23 years on the men, aged between 17 and 20 years old, when they were detained in early 2023.

The men were found guilty of committing 13 attacks on railway infrastructure and energy facilities between December 2022 and January 2023 in Moscow and the Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk.

The group also reportedly planned to destroy a military aircraft at an air base in Russia’s Far East region.

Russia has reported an increase in sabotage acts on railways and factories since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The incidents are often attributed to Ukrainian intelligence services.

On Tuesday, Russia’s FSB security service said it had detained a further 39 individuals accused of collaborating with Ukrainian agents.
