Salah scores as Liverpool hand Manchester City first defeat this season
Impressive Mo Salah powered Liverpool to a 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday in the English Premier League.
Liverpool bounced back from last week’s defeat to Arsenal to hand Manchester City their first defeat this season at Anfield.
It was City’s first Premier League away defeat since August 2021 against Spurs.
Both side went into the first half without goals until Salah broke the deadlock for the home team in the 75th minute.
City put up a tough fight for an equaliser, keeping 64 per cent of ball but were contained by Liverpool’s meticulous defenders.
Jurgen Klopp expressed satisfaction his boys’ performance against City as the Reds secure crucial win to move up 8th on EPL log.
“Result? Perfect. Performance? Really, really good. Incredibly intense game. We defended on a very high level for 99 minutes,” Klopp said. “We should have maybe scored a second or a third. In the box, we really adjusted well. Haaland had only one free header. We defended the six yard box and won the duels.”
Speaking after Sunday’s defeat, Pep Guardiola said it was “real tight game. We made a mistake, and we lost the game. Kevin didn’t follow the movement of Salah on the halfway line.”
Sunday’s defeat has created a four point margin between City and Arsenal. The Gunners now seat atop the EPL long with 27 points in 10 games, while City have 23 points in 10 games.
