In response to the increasing concerns about sedentary lifestyles and the need for accessible health and wellness programmes in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has thrown his support behind the Lagos Active Challenge, a new initiative aimed at promoting physical fitness across the city’s communities.

Launched by the Lagos State Sports Commission, this monthly programme encourages residents to embrace healthier, more active lifestyles by participating in a range of physical activities that test stamina, strength, and endurance.

The challenge is designed to inspire Lagosians to make fitness a regular part of their daily routines.

The inaugural event, held over the weekend, drew thousands of participants from different parts of Lagos. Strength and endurance challenges were held simultaneously in various locations, including Obanikoro, Ifako Ijaiye, Adekunle, Yaba, Isolo, Agege, and Ebute Metta.

Residents of all ages took part in exercises such as push-ups, squats, and endurance runs, with participants receiving prizes ranging from fitness gear to free health screenings.

Lekan Fatodu, director general of the Lagos State Sports Commission, expressed optimism about the impact of the initiative. “The Lagos Active Challenge is a key part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a healthier, more active Lagos. By encouraging both individual participation and community involvement, this program has the potential to create a lasting culture of fitness. We’re excited to see Lagosians embrace wellness as a way of life,” he said.

One of the winners, Adebola Ogunlesi, a 45-year-old businesswoman from Ebute Metta, shared her experience: “Winning was a bonus, but the real highlight for me was the support from everyone around. I never imagined I could complete 50 push-ups. This challenge pushed me to my limits, and I’m proud to say I’ll continue this journey.”

The Lagos Active Challenge goes beyond short-term health benefits; it aims to create long-term habits that can improve public health outcomes across the state. By expanding to more communities each month, the initiative hopes to foster a city-wide movement toward reducing the risk of lifestyle-related diseases like hypertension, obesity, and diabetes.
