The Delta State Commissioner for Transportation, Mike Okah, has urged motorists to desist from storing premium motor Spirit, otherwise called petrol, in cans in their vehicles and homes.

Mr Okah in a statement on Monday gave the warning as a safety precaution due to the persistent nationwide fuel scarcity.

He said that as a result of the scarcity, some motorists fall into the temptation of storing the product in jerry-cans in their vehicles and home.

According to him, life is sacrosanct and there should be high level of safety practices even in the face of the fuel scarcity.

“I urge all inter and intra-state transport operators to ensure that fuel and other inflammable petroleum products are not stored in their vehicles.

“The scarcity has brought disorderliness.

“We should endeavour to be orderly in our conduct at filling stations so as not to compound the bad situation,” he said.

Mr Okah appealed to motorists and commuters to avoid travelling at night, in order to avoid road crashes and falling prey to criminals.

He also urged motorists to avoid indulging in alcohol and drugs that could induce sleep while on the wheels.

“Drivers should always ensure that their vehicles are mechanically and electrically in order before embarking on journeys.

“Worn out and expired tyres should be avoided like plague,” he also said.
