A 28-year-old scavenger, Iliyasu Abdulrahaman, on Tuesday, appeared before a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abuja, for allegedly swindling a point-of-sale operator (POS) to the tune of N250,000.

Abdulrahaman, who resides at Kado Bimko Gwarinpa, Abuja, is standing trial on a one-count charge of cheating.

The prosecutor, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that a nominal complainant, Mohammad Salisu, of the same address, reported the case against the defendant, at the Gwarinpa Police Station, on July 17.

She alleged that the defendant went to the complainant’s POS stand and gave him an Opay account number 9039364361 with account name Ma,awuya Mohammad, and a Palm pay account number 8978145330 with the name Auwal Shuibu to transfer the sum of N 250, 000.

According to him, the defendant promised to give him the cash after a successful transfer.

Ms Nwachukwu told the court that the complainant transferred the sum of N250,000 to the accounts provided by the defendant, but when he demanded for the cash payment, the defendant declined and claimed he did not know the owners of the accounts.

She said that efforts to recover the said money proved abortive.

The offence contravenes the provisions of sections 322 of the Penal Code.

The Magistrate, Musa Jobbo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.

Mr Jobbo ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He adjourned the case until September 17, for hearing.
