Scavenger arraigned over alleged theft of iron rods

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A 26-year-old scavenger, Abubakar Adamu, was on Thursday arraigned in a Senior Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, Abuja, for allegedly stealing iron rods valued at N165,500.

The defendant, who resides in the Tipper Garage axis of Lugbe, Abuja, is facing criminal trespass and theft charges.

The Prosecutor, Abdullahi Tanko, told the court that the complainant, Saheed Barkare of Jedi Estate, Airport Road, Abuja, reported the matter at Iddo Divisional Police station on October  29.

Mr Tanko alleged that on the same date, the defendant broke into STF Global estate airport road, Abuja and stole iron rods of different sizes valued at N165, 500.

He told the court that on his arrest, the defendant refused to disclose the whereabouts of the alleged stolen items.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Senior Magistrate, Nuhu Tukur, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.

He said that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, and adjourned the case until December 3, for hearing.
