Security forces have killed six secessionists during an operation in the Amiyi community, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra.

The Anambra Commissioner of Police (CP) Nnanna Ama disclosed this on Sunday in Awka, in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Mr Ama said a joint security team comprising the army, navy, police, State Security Service (SSS), and local vigilantes conducted the operation.

He said that, following credible intelligence about the activities of a criminal network in Ogbaru LGA, the joint security team carried out an operation in the area on Saturday.

“Acting on intelligence, the team trekked for about four hours through difficult terrain and dense palm forest to an identified camp.

“Upon arriving at the camp, the criminal elements and non-state actors opened fire on security personnel, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire,” he said.

Mr Ama said six suspected members of the armed group were killed while others fled, with some reportedly sustaining gunshot injuries.

He said one security operative was killed while another was injured when an explosive device suspected to have been planted in the area detonated.

“The injured operative is currently receiving medical attention in a hospital,” he said.

The police commissioner said operatives recovered two pump-action guns and charms from the camps during the operation.

He said the identified camps and structures believed to be associated with the group were also dismantled.

He commended the security personnel and community-based operatives for their resilience and professionalism despite the difficult terrain and hostile environment.

“The operation demonstrates the importance of intelligence sharing, inter-agency cooperation and community support in confronting violent criminal elements,” he added.

He commiserated with the family, colleagues and associates of the deceased security operative and wished the injured operative a speedy recovery.

The commissioner reassured residents that the command, in collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders, would sustain intelligence-led operations across the state.

According to him, the operations will focus on dismantling criminal camps, recovering illegal arms and preventing violent groups from establishing operational bases.

Mr Ama urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies.

He stressed that community cooperation remained critical to sustaining peace and security across the state.
