The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mr Amupitan succeeds Mahmood Yakubu, who had served as chairman of the electoral body for 10 years.

The upper chamber approved the confirmation of Mr Amupitan at plenary after hours of screening by the lawmakers.

In his presentation, Mr Amupitan, a Kogi-born legal luminary and deputy vice-chancellor (administration) at the University of Jos, pledged to work with relevant agencies like the National Identity Management Commission to improve the electoral process.
