Senegalese President, Bassirou Faye, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, have welcomed progress in talks towards a new programme supporting the country’s economic recovery.

The Senegalese presidency said on Tuesday that Mr Faye and Ms Georgieva agreed to move quickly towards a new IMF-supported programme following their meeting at the IMF headquarters in Washington.

The two officials discussed Senegal’s economic policy priorities and efforts to strengthen the country’s economic outlook while advancing cooperation towards a new fund-supported programme.

Ms Georgieva said the IMF and Senegal had a “strong partnership” and were working expeditiously towards a new fund-supported programme to support the country’s economic recovery.

“Senegal has made encouraging progress in strengthening the economy and improving the outlook for investments, jobs and growth,” Ms Georgieva said in a separate statement.

She also welcomed the Senegalese authorities’ intention to pursue debt treatment, saying the country was determined to restore fiscal sustainability quickly while strengthening economic prospects.
