Retired Senegalese footballer Pape Bouba Diop has passed on aged 42, reports, including by Goal, said on Sunday.

The former Teranga Lions midfielder died after battling an undisclosed ailment.

The late footballer — famous for scoring Senegal’s lone goal, which handed the West African rookies a historic win against France in the 2002 World Cup opener — enjoyed a sterling career in the English topflight with Fulham and Portsmouth.

Mr. Diop won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008.

His passing comes four days after famed Argentine footballer and coach Diego Maradona, 60, died from a heart attack.
