Seplat Energy has reaffirmed its commitment to bridging the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, particularly within the oil and gas industry.

Eleanor Adarelegbe, Seplat’s chief financial officer, gave the assurance in a statement on Sunday following her keynote address at the Society of Petroleum Engineers Women Leadership Lecture Series.

According to her, the company is taking concrete steps to address the under-representation of women in STEM via mentorship and sponsorship programmes.

She noted that women currently occupy only 15 per cent of junior roles in oil and gas, with even fewer advancing into leadership positions.

“Advancing gender diversity in STEM requires commitment from all, especially leaders, both men and women, to foster a more inclusive and innovative industry,” she said.

Chioma Afe, the director of External Affairs and Social Performance, said innovation thrives in environments that embrace diverse perspectives. Advocacy must start early, inspiring girls in basic education to explore STEM pathways.

She further highlighted the significance of male allyship in overcoming cultural barriers and advancing gender equity within the workplace.

“Men hold most leadership positions women aim for. Their support is essential to creating inclusive environments. Women must also develop relevant competencies,” Ms Afe said.

Ms Afe noted Seplat’s commitment to gender equity, stating the company ensures all perspectives are respected and valued in decision-making processes at every level.

She highlighted initiatives such as the Seplat Women Awesome Network, a mentorship platform for women, and a 40 per cent female participation target for top undergraduates.

Ms Afe also spoke about the Seplat Teachers’ Empowerment Programme, which has trained over 1,300 educators, 60 per cent of whom are women in Delta and Edo.
