A popular Ibadan-born Islamic preacher, Sheikh Muhyideen Bello, 84, died in the early hours of Friday. A fellow preacher, Sheikh Taofeeq Akewugbagold, confirmed his death in a Facebook post.

“Today is one of my saddest days! My father and mentor has returned to his creator,” Mr Akewugbagold partly wrote without giving details about the circumstances surrounding Mr Bello’s death.

The deceased was renowned for his fearless sermons about righteousness and death.

Below are seven facts about the renowned cleric

  1. Sheikh Muyideen was born in 1940 into the respected family of Bello Ajani and Ubaidat Bello of Arolu Compound, Ita Olukoyi, Ibadan, Oyo State.
  2. He had his elementary Western education at 1. D.C Primary School, Elekuro, Ibadan, the same school where he completed his secondary education.
  3. Mr Bello had his Islamic and Arabic education at Mahdul Arabiy, Elekuro, from 1963 to 1967, where he learned his unique ways of delivering sermons.
  4. The Islamic cleric started preaching at a very tender age and had touched countless lives, intimating many with the ways of Allāh and the importance of spiritual purity.
  5. He spent considerable years teaching in the northern parts of the country.
  6. He was also the missioner of the foremost Islamic organisation Ansaru-Deen Society of Nigeria.
  7. The deceased was survived by wives and children.
