Two internally displaced persons have died, and more than 1,000 houses were destroyed when fire swept through Muna Alamdari IDP camp in Maiduguri.

The fire broke out at approximately 6:00 a.m. and was extinguished after over an hour by fire department personnel.

The director-general of the State Emergency Management Agency, Barkindo Muhammad, said on Wednesday in Maiduguri that the IDPs, Civilian Joint Task Force, security agencies and some good Samaritans also assisted in putting out the fire.

Mr Muhammad said the agency had commenced an assessment of the damages while making efforts to provide immediate humanitarian support to the victims.

“We are immediately providing 500 bags of rice, blankets and other non-food items to mitigate their suffering,” the official said.
