Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation calls for national unity as Lent, Ramadan coincide

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has extended warm greetings to Christian and Muslim faithful across Nigeria as they commenced the sacred observances of Lent and Ramadan on Wednesday.
It described the rare coincidence of the two seasons as a powerful symbol of shared spiritual heritage and national reflection.
In a statement signed by its director-general, Abubakar Umar, the foundation stated that the simultaneous commencement of Lent and Ramadan underscored the common values that unite both faiths, including sacrifice, self-discipline, repentance, compassion, charity and spiritual renewal.
The foundation said the alignment presents a unique opportunity for Nigerians to embrace unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, urging citizens to rise above religious, ethnic and political differences to strengthen national cohesion.
It appealed for greater compassion and solidarity among Nigerians, encouraging acts of kindness, support for vulnerable groups, forgiveness and reconciliation during the holy seasons.
The foundation also called on religious leaders to use their pulpits and platforms to promote messages of unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, rather than rhetoric that breeds division or discord within communities.
Similarly, it urged political leaders to refrain from divisive statements and actions that could undermine national harmony, and instead prioritise dialogue, inclusivity and policies that foster peace and sustainable development.
“As we journey through these sacred periods, we must pray fervently for peace, stability, unity and sustainable development in Nigeria,” he said.
Mr Umar added that the lessons of Lent and Ramadan should inspire Nigerians to work collectively for the good of present and future generations, transcending ethnic, religious and political lines.
