Six Nigerians arrested over alleged romance scams, visa overstays in Thailand

Thai police on Friday arrested six Nigerians in Nonthaburi over their alleged involvement in romance scams, confisticating phones, laptops, bank note and other gadgets retrieved from them.
Codenamed “Dark Room Crackdown,” the operation that led to the arrest of the six Nigerian nationals was carried out by Thai police on near Phra Nang Klao Bridge in Bang Kraso, Muang district.
The six suspects were identified only as Dennis, Ejikeme, Ibekwe, Okorom, Nwosu and Obielu.
The Thai police said apart from being fingered in romance scams targetting Thai women and defrauding them using AI generated photos on social media, the suspects had also overstayed their visas.
Mr Dennis, 23, overstayed his visa by 726 days, Mr Ejikeme, 24, overstayed his visa by 827 days and Mr Ibekwe, 29, overstayed his visa by 1,166 days.
While Mr Okorom, 26, overstayed his visa by 695 days, Messrs Nwosu, 30, and Obielu respectively overstayed their visas by 1,560 days and an unspecified period.
According to the Thai police, the sextet entered Thailand with student visas, living together and running a romance scam network.
They have no evidence of attending classes or regular employment records with Thai authorities.
