Slain Farmers: Osinbajo’s silence rattles Nigerians

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has been severely censured by Nigerians for failing to sympathise with the victims of the weekend Boko Haram attack, which left at least 110 farmers in Borno killed.
Mr. Osinbajo has yet to issue a statement, 48 hours after dozens of farmers were beheaded by jihadists on a rice farm near Zabarmari, about 20 kilometres from Maiduguri.
The vice president has remained tight-lipped on the carnage, despite the nationwide furore it ignited over the weekend.
Rattled by Mr. Osinbajo’s conduct, many Nigerians have taken to Twitter to call-out the vice president for his presumed lack of empathy.
Mr. Osinbajo had belatedly condoled victims of the Lekki Toll-Gate shootings, after Nigerians chided him for keeping mum two days after troops opened live rounds on unarmed protesters at the toll plaza on October 20.
Meanwhile, a presidential spokesman Garba Shehu, who reacted to the Borno attack on Monday, blamed the slain farmers for failing to obtain military clearance before resuming farming activities on the rice field located in the troubled Zabarmari village.
President Muhammadu Buhari has also faced calls to sack military chiefs in the wake of the attacks.
