A former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has described those killed during the recent 10-day #EndBadGovernance protests as having sacrificed their lives for a better Nigeria.

In a statement on his X account, Mr Obi expressed condolences to those who lost their lives, including security agents during the demonstrations.

“These individuals gave their lives while advocating for better governance in our nation,” Mr Obi said.

Extending sympathies to the families of the deceased, Mr Obi urged the Nigerian government to address the underlying issues that ignited the protests.

Mr Obi said, “I also want to take this moment to urge all leaders to reflect on the cries of the suffering people and address their legitimate demands. It is crucial for us, the leaders, to urgently address the issues that sparked and fuelled these protests.

“Addressing insecurity, fighting corruption, alleviating hardship, and combating poverty are urgent matters that require immediate attention. I call on all leaders to take decisive action to resolve these critical issues.”

According to Amnesty International, more than 23 people were killed during police face-off with the protesters.

The human rights organisation condemned the use of live ammunition by the police and called for a thorough investigation into these incidents.

The police, however, denied the allegations, noting that they were professional while securing lives and property during the demonstrations.
