Social media erupts in anger over cop’s killing of handcuffed Delta suspect

Anger has erupted on social media after a Nigeria Police Force (NPF) officer, Nuhu Usman, attached to the Delta State Police Command, was captured on video shooting a handcuffed suspect to death.
In the viral that emerged on social media on Tuesday a man identified as Mene Ogidi, had his hands cuffed behind his back, pleading for mercy before Mr Usman fatally shot him, creating a gory image that has now sparked public anger over the incident.
Reports noted that the victim offence stemmed from the firearms discovered in a package he was trying to send to someon. He was said to have been exposed when scrutiny led to the opening of the package and rather than embark on probe, one of the cops who handled the matter shot him dead in public glare.
In a statement on Tuesday, spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, confirmed that the video was authentic, saying the incident happened in Effurun on April 26, and the operatives involved were attached to the Area Command Effurun.
Mr Edafe alleged that the officers had apprehended the suspect while he was attempting to waybill ammunition, noting that Mr Usman violated the NPF regulations by shooting Mr Ogidi.
He added that Mr Usman had been arrested and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja for disciplinary action.
“The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, has condemned in strong terms the extra-judicial killing of a suspect, one Mene Ogidi, aged 28 years, which occurred on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State.
“The unfortunate incident occurred when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun received credible intelligence from members of the public regarding the deceased, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition,” the statement read.
The statement added, “Police operatives were promptly deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”
The police also blamed the cop’s act on spiritual forces.
Reminiscing about the wounds from the 2020 #EndSARS protest six years ago, netizens have taken to social media to demand accountability in Mr Ogidi’s killing, calling on the authorities to take firm steps to end police brutality.
On X, @iamking_boss stated, “Disheartening to see videos like this in 2026, what crime could this young Nigerian have committed ?? Even if he is an armed robber, a kidnapper or even a bandit, no law in Nigeria gives police men power to be both judge, jury and executioner shooting at a defenceless person. This is a crime against humanity. Those policemen should be called in for questioning.”
Another user @yomjeezy called on the Inspector- General of Police, Tunji Disu, to address the police growing misconduct, stating “These men are murderers. The police are not supposed to summarily execute suspects. We need to make sure this gets all the exposure and hold the police accountable. @TunjiDisu1 -The buck stops with you.”
“@edafebright I am so sorry to say this but the Nigeria Police Force have failed us. An apology and that’s it, nothing more. I hope you police officers know that if we the citizens can’t hold you guys accountable, there is a righteous judge there who sees everything. The impunity of this police officers needs to be checked,” Instagram user @akal_emmanuel stated.
Also on Instagram @kingfysal argued that every officer that was part of the patrol should be arrested alongside Mr Usman.
“Honestly, if he’s the only person you arrested, you haven’t done a good job at all. The entire team is obviously complicit. His actions show this isn’t the first time they have done this. It’s sad how, right before our eyes, the system is becoming rotten. May Nigeria never happen to us. It is well,” he said.
Also, @smart_king_01 commented, “You and your people are very shameless, Nigerians are too patient by now the whole police force suppose don get top bosses sacked immediately for this, actions should have been taken.
“The other day na soldiers, today na police another day herdsmen, next terrorist, next kidnapper etc. Nigerians are not tired when we are, the streets will be too small to contain us, the march will be international and the result permanent. People like you have no place in public office, shameless bunch of idi**@@@ts.”
An X user, @OurFavOnlineDoc wrote, “Just see this barbarism. Armed animals suspected to be policemen from the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State tied up a man in broad daylight and shot him to death. No prosecution. No court trial. Just jungle justice by Nigerian police. WIlD ANIMALS.
Besides, another user, @General_Somto also wrote, “Another victim speaks out against ASP Usman Nuhu And his Team responsible For the extrajudicial Killing Of Oghenemine in Delta State. Reveals shocking ordeal of ass@ult, har@ssment and extortion: @PoliceNG_CRU
Another X user, @itz_taser tweeted the gory image of the killing and wrote, “Men who alleged to be police officers kpai a man in public. Is this legal?”
Also commenting, an X user, @AjJelex5 also wrote with a caption, “The brutal killing of Oghenemine (OG Million) by police officer Nuhu Usman must not go unanswered. Arresting the killer is not enough, the entire leadership of the Delta Police Command must be removed and investigated NOW. #EndPoliceBrutality #EndPoliceBrutality.
“Amidst the extrajudicial killing of the suspect in the viral video that emerged from Sapele Delta State yesterday, did you also notice how bad the weapon that was used in sh0oting the victim was? That gun was so rusty that the monstr0us policeman had to remove the magazine to get the gun functional again. This tells a lot about how inefficient the police unit have become in Nigeria,” stated an X user, @AnyanwuMalachy.
