Officers of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday brutalised officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps performing their duties in the Yaba area of the state.

“Earlier today, officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), lawfully engaged in their duties in Yaba, were subjected to an unprovoked attack by personnel of the Nigerian Army under the directive of Major Adebiyi and Captain Gowon,’’ the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed in a statement.

Condemning the attack by the soldiers, the commissioner appreciated the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General T. Lagbaja, and the Director of Chaplain Services, Lt. Col. T.E. Ogbonyomi, for intervening to ensure that the soldiers respect civil authorities.

Mr Wahab stated that KAI officers would perform their duties unhindered and the army leadership would ensure that soldiers were subjected to the authority of civil governance within their jurisdictions.

He said, “We strongly condemn this unwarranted and unacceptable assault on officers executing their lawful duties. Moving forward, such acts will not be tolerated.”

The commissioner reiterated his commitment to ensuring a cleaner state by upholding safety and sanitation standards.
