The Pretoria Magistrates Court, South Africa, on Tuesday adjourned the case against six people arrested in connection with the murder of Nigerian e-hailing driver Isaac Satlat until June for further investigations.

Presiding magistrate Aubrey Mphalele approved the adjournment as the six accused appeared in court, having abandoned their bail applications.

While Dikeledi Mphela (24), Goitsione Machidi (25), McClaren Mushwana (30), Tumishang Mabutlane (23) and Ofentse Senwamadi (18) are charged with premeditated murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, Thabang Mothwa (25) is facing robbery charges with aggravating circumstances.

Defence lawyer Thabiso Mphahlele stated that his clients are willing to plead to all the charges.

“What we made clear to the state is that we are going to plead on all the charges that will be brought to them, particularly for accused number four,” Mr Mphalele said. “I am also informed that the matter will be taken to the high court, so we are waiting for the indictment so that we can finalise this matter ”.

In February, Mr Setlat, a Nigerian working as an e-hailing driver in South Africa, was killed by passengers caught on camera strangling him.

The development generated widespread condemnation among Nigerians in the diaspora, who demanded justice for the deceased.

The chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the incident as unacceptable and deeply disturbing, stressing that justice must be served.

Meanwhile, family spokesperson Izang Ashoms, who revealed Mr Setlat’s death negatively affected the family, said the deceased would be laid to rest on March 21.
