South Korea, U.S. launch eight missiles in response to North Korea

South Korea and the United States launched eight surface-to-surface missiles in response to a barrage of short-range ballistic missiles launched by North Korea on Sunday.
On Monday, the militaries of South Korea and the U.S. fired eight surface-to-surface missiles in response to the eight missiles fired by the North on Sunday, Reuters reports.
U.S. Indo-Pacific Command confirmed the military action, saying the exercise included one U.S. Army missile and seven from South Korea.
“The ROK-U.S. Alliance remains committed to peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the Indo-Pacific,” the Command said in a statement.
On Sunday, North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) into the waters off its east coast. The launch makes it the 17th successful launch by North Korea this year.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the eight missiles travelled distances of between 110 to 670 kilometres (68 to 416 miles) at altitudes of 25 to 90 kilometres (15 to 55 miles) and speeds from Mach 3 to Mach 6.
The missiles were launched from four sites in North Korea: The Sunan area in the capital Pyongyang, Kaechon in South Pyongan province, Tongchang-ri in North Pyongan province and Hamhung in South Hamgyong province.
