South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Thursday urged continued efforts to ease tensions with North Korea, reiterating the need for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Speaking at a weekly meeting with senior aides, Mr Lee said South Korea must move away from what he described as a past marked by confrontation and the risk of conflict.

“The values we must pursue are peace and stability. We must break away from the past that was racing toward war and confrontation,” he said.

Mr Lee added that sustained communication, dialogue and cooperation could gradually build trust between the two sides, eventually laying the groundwork for structural peace on the peninsula.
